Excerpt

Grant the mystery man—a delicious mystery Shayla would like to unravel, piece by piece, layer by layer. Ah, but I can’t. I’m his boss. In a different lifetime, if we didn’t have the whole boss-employee obstacle going on…. No harm in looking, though, just a little, since he sat so close. She promised herself to keep her thoughts G-rated—okay, maybe PG-13. Grant had a talent with numbers and paid attention to detail. Also, he was a little shy and standoffish to a lot of people when it came to anything other than work. Shayla wondered where he sometimes went in his head, because, every now and then, his smile slipped from his face, just for a second, before being replaced with one a little harder. None of my business, she reminded herself.
She had really wanted to hug him this morning after seeing him so frustrated but decided it might be wiser and more appropriate to show him there were a few people on his side. Seeing him break things and try to be all strong and humorous about it made Shayla want to unravel the Grant mystery even more. It kind of hurt to watch him pretending to be fine, but all she could offer him was lunch and good conversation. Hopefully, Mr. Strong and Silent—Sydney called him that sometimes, although never to his face—knew Shayla and Sydney cared. And Shayla did care. Because he’s a friend. Just a friend.
Grant raised his soda in a toast. “To things not being worse,” he announced with a rueful half smile. “And, uh”—he cleared his throat—“to good company.” He nodded at Sydney, and when he met Shayla’s gaze, he held it. In his dark eyes, she saw hunger, wide-open desire, and about a million other things she couldn’t puzzle out. Grant looked at her that way sometimes, and she did her best to ignore it. He might have a small crush on her, or he could have a thing for petite, small-breasted girls possessing a great fashion sense.
Sydney broke the silence. “To good food and even better friends.” She clinked Grant’s glass, and Shayla came back to reality and smiled, pretending she wasn’t experiencing several different kinds of inappropriate thoughts and feelings for a sexy, complicated man who was her employee and also her friend. She needed to behave and remember things could never go any further than a panty-melting gaze.

As Týr jogged down to the ground floor, Hedori acknowledged him with a nod, and the ice queen who’d reigned during the reception and tacitly ignored his provocations turned, too. Her hazel-green eyes flared in irritation, the color a startling contrast to her luscious, creamy-latte skin.
“Sire, we have a bit of a situation,” Hedori said. “With the fae here, and guests still about, I cannot leave the castle just yet. Would you take Kira home?”
“No-no, Heds,” she quickly countered. “I’ll wait for you.”
He should leave, walk out. Aethan or another could take her, but Týr couldn’t resist. “Ah, Fluff, you wound me. Truly.”
Her head snapped his way. “Yes…maybe, if I thought for one second there was a heart or soul buried somewhere deep down under that shell,” she said sweetly, tone spiked with venom. She faced Hedori again, sweet as treacle. “How long do you think you’ll be?”
Hiding his amusement, Týr sighed loudly as if put out. “C’mon, Fluff, let’s get you home.”
She pivoted so fast, fingers fisting as if she wanted to punch him. “Call me that again, and I swear, I’ll—” She broke off, her expression tightening as softer footsteps echoed. Lila Smith, their Oracle and the she-devil’s grandmother, rounded the staircase a moment later.
Hedori nodded to them and departed.
“Thank goodness you’re still here, Kira dear,” Lila breathed. “Would you— Oh, hello, Warrior,” she greeted him softly with a regal incline of her gray-haired head.
Lila usually treated the Guardians injured by those annoying demon bolts with her miracle potions and salves since they couldn’t self-heal that crap fast enough. More annoying, those open wounds acted like a damn tracking device for the hellscums.
“Oracle,” he returned politely.
Lila glanced back at Kira. “I have to go to Seattle for a few days. The coven has a problem and needs my help. It would ease my mind if you stayed here at the castle until my return.”
“Gran, I don’t know why you worry so much. It’s not the first time I’ve been alone. Besides, I have to go to work. I’ll be okay, really.”
Týr could sense the Oracle’s growing anxiety, though her expression remained serene. It could only mean that whatever had gotten her so worked up was serious. Michael should talk to her. Better if the Guardians knew what trouble was stirring.
Lila glanced at him. “Warrior? Would you—?”
“Gran, no!”
Her horrified yell had Týr narrowing his eyes. He’d be the first to admit that he wasn’t fit company for females to be around for any length of time, but she and the Oracle were under Michael’s protection, and by default, the Guardians’, too.
And he took his damn job seriously.
“It would be my absolute pleasure,” he overrode Kira’s protest with as much sincerity as he could dredge up.
If it were anyone else they would have undoubtedly stepped back at her death glare.
But his own perverse nature when it came to her wouldn’t let him back down. He merely quirked an eyebrow, enjoying her flush of frustration, and sent a quick telepathic message to Aethan. Babysit Ely tonight. Have to do a favor for the Oracle.
Would that have anything to do with a certain bridesmaid who wants to leave immediately? the Empyrean shot back, laughter echoing through their mental connection.
Damn smug bastard. As if he needed another funny-man around. Týr shut off their mind-link with a hard slam.
“Are you leaving also?” Týr asked the Oracle, suspending his silent stand-off with Kira.
“Yes, if you wouldn’t mind, Warrior.”
“Not at all.” He crossed to the enormous front door, opened it, and stood back.
“I’ll go get my coat.” Lila hurried off.
Kira stomped past him with no outdoor wear or scarf. Hell, he’d never known lush lips could thin so much. Týr followed her out into the freezing weather. “Where’s your jacket?”
“I’m hot.”
“Yeah, you are,” he muttered under his breath.
Her head snapped to him, eyes flashing in suspicion.
He cast her an innocent stare.
Scowling, she went back to slaying the trees with her glower.
He shook his head wryly. It must be the drugged air from so many flowers in the castle responsible for him uttering that provocative nonsense.

Thirty minutes later, she stood reaching for a potted vase sitting on the top shelf in the showroom when the bell over the door pealed. Before she could climb off the short stool, hard hands clasped her waist and lifted her down as if she weighed nothing. Flustered, she looked up, gritted her teeth and shifted in uncomfortable awareness when her eyes met Chief Nolan MacGregor’s amused gaze. Okay, she admitted it wasn’t the man’s physical appearance she objected to. What woman wouldn’t look twice at a six foot two, broad shouldered, slim hipped man who wore a Stetson tipped low enough to draw the eyes to the slit of his cobalt blue gaze? No, it was the arrogant dominance he wore like a comfortable coat that put her on edge whenever he entered her place, more so now he was crowding her against the shelves and making her even more aware of that ripped body. She much preferred easy-going, polite men.
Wishing it was anyone but him, she stated with a huff, “You’re crowding me, Chief.”
Those sensuous lips curved in a slow smile as he stepped back. “I wouldn’t make you so uncomfortable if you’d let yourself cut loose with me.”
Damn. There went that warm flush spreading through her body when he thumbed back his hat far enough for those enigmatic, blue eyes to zero in on her with a long perusal. He made no effort to hide the appreciative trail he took from her braided, dark brown hair to her sneaker-clad feet. How one look from him could make her dormant body sit up and take notice when she didn’t even like the man was beyond her. She sure as heck didn’t like it. She’d never been one to be ruled by baser urges, instead preferring a positive connection with a man or woman before embarking on a friendship, something that was definitely lacking between her and the chief.
Shuffling behind the counter, Mia breathed a sigh of relief once she put the wide, butcher block space between them. She glanced up, way up at the only man who’d been able to get under her skin. There wasn’t one thing she could pinpoint that rubbed her the wrong way; instead, it seemed to be the uneasy combination of arrogance, dominance and male magnetism she objected to, and her betraying body’s response to those undesirable traits. There was no use denying the way her pulse spiked under the slow stroke of his ice-blue eyes that was as potent as a caress, a reaction she should be used to by now since it had been occurring from the moment she first set eyes on him kissing that woman all those years ago.
“Thanks, Chief, but I have enough on my plate right now to keep me from even thinking about being added to your long list of conquests,” she returned primly, ignoring his taunting smirk. “Thank you for your order. Trish has it ready for you.” She pulled the vase forward.
“I didn’t peg you as the type to listen to small town rumors, Ms. Reynolds.” He nodded at the colorful arrangement. “Nice, thank you. I’m glad I caught you in.” The way he drew out Ms. Reynolds in a slow drawl hinted he knew about the finalization of her divorce. He and every other citizen in Whitetail.
Reaching into his breast pocket, Chief McGregor pulled out two tickets and slid them across the counter toward her. Tilting his hat back even further, he offered her a better view of his rugged face bronzed by sun and wind and capped with coal black hair tinted grey around his forehead. “You haven’t paid these.”
“I’m sorry, I’ve been so busy, I forgot.” Picking up the parking tickets, she winced at the fines. Her habit of pulling over and parking wherever it was convenient to expedite her errands resulted in a parking fine more often than not. That was just one of Pete’s constant complaints that went along with her always being in a hurry. “I can come in later this afternoon and take care of them.”
Leaning on the counter, he replied in that deep voice that never failed to curl her toes. “See that you do. Or, better yet, don’t. Now that you’re officially free, it’ll give me a good excuse to offer you a choice of consequences.”
The corners of his mouth kicked up in another smile, but she couldn’t miss the hint of a threat behind his words that set her heart to hammering with uncertainty. That didn’t concern her near as much as the sudden warm gush between her legs. She didn’t even like the man, for pity’s sake, and she really didn’t care for his forward insinuations.

Excerpt

“Bud says to take her to the conference room,” Luccinni said. He hung up the phone. “He said to make sure she isn’t wearing a wire, and tie her up. He’ll be here as soon as he concludes his business downstairs with the A-Rab. It’ll take thirty to forty minutes.”
“Cal, you go in the conference room first,” said Luccinni, who seemed to be in charge. “Make sure you can see her at all times, and have your gun on her. You’ve seen her perform. You know how quick and strong she is. Colleen, you walk very slowly into the room. I’ll be right behind you, and I won’t hesitate to shoot. In fact, any sudden moves at all, and both of us will let you have it.”
When the three of them were in the conference room, Luccinni said, “Now take off your clothes. Move slowly.”
“Is this how you get your kicks?” Olivia asked as she started disrobing. She acted reluctant, but was relieved at the turn of events. Naked, she might be able to change before she got shot. It was extremely unlikely that any of the bullets were silver-plated. She knew she had to make her move before they could tie her up.
“This just makes it easy to see if you’re wearing a wire, babe,” Luccinni said, “but I got to admit, seeing you with no clothes is a bonus. Slide the duds over to Cal. He’ll check to make sure there’s no concealed wire.”
After examining Olivia’s clothes, Stevens said, “No wire here.” He looked her up and down and added, “Man, I wouldn’t mind getting a piece of that.”
“How about it, bitch?” Luccinni said. “You do us on the conference table, and we’ll try to convince the boss not to have you whacked after he’s done questioning you.”
“Sure, boys, sure,” Olivia said, even though she knew he was lying. “We can all be friends here. I’ll climb up on the table.”
“Move slow!” Luccinni commanded.
Olivia got on the table and lay on her back with her knees up and spread wide apart. The two men looked at each other, silently deciding the order in which they’d service her. Luccinni was the winner. He handed his gun to Stevens, unzipped himself revealing a full erection, and climbed on the table. He touched her nipples and genitals, and Olivia allowed herself to shiver. Luccinni grinned and prepared to mount her. As soon as he was poised over her body ready to begin penetration, Olivia changed. Luccinni jerked upward as he suddenly found himself looking into the snarling face of a leopard instead of an attractive woman. That was the final moment of his life. The leopard grasped his throat in her jaws and ripped. Blood spurted and Luccinni was dead.
Stevens stared in disbelief, momentarily unable to move. Then he opened fire, emptying his gun at the leopard, knocking her to the side, but unable to kill her. Stevens started for the door. The leopard leaped on Stevens’s back. She clamped her jaws on the back of his neck and crushed his spinal cord.
The leopard changed, and Olivia found herself on the floor on her hands and knees, breathing hard, feeling sore where the bullets had bounced off the leopard’s body. After about thirty seconds, she stood up and went over to Stevens. He was paralyzed from the neck down, but still alive. She found a couple of spare magazines on his body, loaded his gun, used one bullet to finish him off, and started down the stairs, not bothering to put on clothes.

Featured Book with Excerpt and Giveaway: Plains of Exodus by Robert J Burnett

Plains of Exodus Tour Graphic
Plains of Exodus
Genre: Science Fiction
Publisher: Azure Spider Publications
Publication Date: October 31, 2018
As refugees in a vast sprawling empire, mankind must find and fight for a new homeland after Earth's destruction. Plains of Exodus chronicles this epic struggle.
Mankindís first contact with an extraterrestrial species didnít exactly go well. The inadvertent destruction of the Earth saw a call go out to the vast and ancient empire for help. Despite the quick response to this plea for aid, the remnants of humanity find themselves refugees in an overcrowded galaxy and at the mercy of an empire whose existence predates mankindís own existence.
Unwanted and unwelcome, humanity languishes in a dozen massive colony ships around an energy poor star.
As a young smuggler Jonah Mctier is one of those fortunate few who has access to this millennia old realm, and it is he who after fleeing a triad of imperial cruisers discovers the answer to mankindís dilemma.
In desperation Jonah finds refuge in a parsecs deep dust cloud where he discovers not only a habitable and empty planetary system but one of the most sought after resources in the Milky Way: a spatial conduit. Except this is no ordinary conduit.
Exploitation of this unique and unknown type of spatial gateway offers an alternative to the slow but inevitable descent into extinction for the children of Adam. Key to this bright future is the need to keep their phenomenal find a secret from the resource hungry empire who would take this discovery for themselves and themselves alone.
To complicate matters Jonah discovers that there is more than one of these gateways, and for humanity to be successful in their quest mankind must hold and eventually destroy all of these rare portals.

“They are aware of us,” Munna said and looked up with a hopelessness in those wide eyes that had Jonah’s heart sink.
“Continue to the conduit.” He said in harsh tones. “Jamie, open a hailing frequency.”
They moved toward the wormhole as the cruiser continued its implacable advance. Jamie struggled with the unfamiliar technology before calling, “They’re responding.”
“Halt your acceleration at once and identify yourself,” came the high-pitched almost squeaking voice of the commander who appeared on the viewscreen.
For a fraction of a second Jonah didn’t understand the words. Something had caught his eye just before the image of the Taarkylan officer had taken over the screen. Another cruiser? Then the voice repeated its demand, and Jonah turned cold angry eyes to the disheveled alien.
“I am Commander Jonah Mactier. You are in violation of our sovereign territory. Disengage and resume a course out of this area.”
The commander laughed, but the purple eyes shifted uneasily from Jonah to Munna. “You are under arrest, commander. If you do not cease acceleration I will fire upon your ship. You have some serious charges to face. Another ship is already approaching. Do as I command.”
Jonah felt any hope dissipate. The Taarkylan commander saw this and grinned. From what he could see of the cruiser’s interior, the ship had sustained some damage, but Jonah didn’t doubt it was still more than capable of carrying out the officer’s threat. That damned grin.
“Sever the connection.” He told Jamie before saying to Munna, “Keep going.”
Black space replaced the Taarkylan face, and he got a clear view of the second cruiser as it limped toward them. This one had suffered heavy damage as well but what did it matter? Either could see them as drifting debris among other blackened hulks.
The first cruiser was turning to fire; and Jonah uttered a small prayer. My love to you, my wife and baby. We almost made it. Remember us.
“Conduit acquisition,” Munna announced, but Jonah wasn’t listening.
He was about to say how sorry he was for the children when the second cruiser opened fire. Instinctively he closed his eyes but opened them almost at once when no blast struck the ship.
Open-mouthed, he saw the first cruiser spout gas and materials into space—the great ship suddenly listing and drifting away.
It wasn’t dead though, and a long lance of purple light erupted from its damaged hull to strike the attacking cruiser.
“Go,” Jonah screamed to Munna, and the alien acted—starting the program and heading the vessel toward the conduit while the two cruisers exchanged fire once more.

About Robert J. Burnett

Robert J. Burnett
After crisscrossing the country on more than one occasion, Robert J. Burnett and his wife Louise are currently living in northern British Colombia where they hope each day that they wonít be burnt up in the massive fires ravaging the province. Coming a close second to these fears are the worries about being eaten by bears. Mosquitoes scare him too.
Robís favourite religion is Christianity, but heís never met a druid or a pagan he didnít like. That said, he doesnít like them if theyíre smelly. Same with bears.
His fondest wish is to be abducted by aliens and taken to their home-world where he will miraculously return to his mid-twenties and be given super powers.
His music likes could be said to be a bit eclectic, ranging from classical to Celtic, especially those composed by non-smelly druids or pagans.
Voted in high school as most likely to lose all his teeth before sixty, he can proudly state that this has not happened as he still retains twelve. It is this ferocious smile, he believes, that scare off most bears.
Today he lives a productive life of non-work, listening to Ancient Astronaut and Hangar 51 shows, a hobby he has cultivated in his expectation of being abducted and taken off-planet. At least he wonít lose his job for failing to show up for work.
As a father to four sons, Rob fervently hopes that all his children will breed and produce offspring who in their turn will support him in his dotage.

Guest Post

Here's an interesting guest post from Sharon Buchbinder on bridging the paranormal with reality.
Bridges between Worlds: Science and the Paranormal
Paranormal events have played a role in my life since childhood. I have always accepted this alternate reality that many others do not experience or recognize. Their disbelief doesn’t dismiss my psychic experiences: dreams that come true, that I think of someone–and that person calls, and that I knew my sister was pregnant before she did. In the 1970’s while a psychology major at the University of Connecticut, I participated in telepathy experiments using the now famous J.B. Rhine Zener cards and other images. My “hit rate” as a receiver was statistically greater than chance occurrence. I lived in a haunted duplex in college and could hear the ghost who lived there (my brother could see her). Curiosity and pragmatism took me down the paths of psychology (BA), neuroscience (MA in Psychology), Nursing (AAS) and finally, public health (PhD).
When I participated in the telepathy experiments in college, little did I know the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) work with psychic spies, remote viewing, and the infamous MK ULTRA behavioral modification program was in full swing. I now suspect the experiments were a CIA recruitment tool for psychic talents. Disbanded for ethical reasons, the full text of the Congressional report on MKULTRA, the CIA’s Program on Research in Behavioral Modification 1977 is available online from the U.S. Senate and as a reprint from the University of Michigan. A large scientifically conducted evaluation study found the results of psychic efforts, such as remote viewing, were positive. However, while the statistics were good, the intelligence wasn’t “detailed enough for practical uses in the field”. The military picked up where the CIA left off. As far as the rest of the world was concerned, the Army, Air Force, and Defense Intelligence Agency discontinued their psychic soldier units a decade later—after the MKULTRA debacle.
In my Eye of the Eagle, Bert Blackfeather is the Director of the Anomaly Defense Division in Homeland Security, Crow Native American, wounded warrior—and an eagle shapeshifter. He works within one of the most science and fact-driven agencies in the country. Yet, he heads a division of remote viewers, empaths, telepaths, clairvoyants, jinni hunters, and other agents with psychic or paranormal talents. Why? Because in my world, after 9-11, based on the top-secret recommendations of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the House Committee on Homeland Security, those units were consolidated and moved into his division. Bert manages these talented agents and deploys them on missions to protect our country from acts of terror, both foreign and domestic. Who knows? Maybe the Anomaly Defense Division I created in 2015 is alive and well under another name!

Leopard's Daughter Tour Graphic
Leopard's Daughter
Series: Were-Leopard Series Book 1
Genre: Crime, Fantasy
Publisher: Azure Spider Publications
Publication Date: September 15, 2018
Spine-tingling were-leopard fun
Leopard’s Daughter is a markedly original crime novel with elements of the occult. In a world where vampires and werewolves exist, but are extremely rare, Bobby Sandar, his wife, Olivia, and their two oldest children are were-leopards. Bobby and Olivia are Secret Service agents. Following Bobby’s death, Olivia feels the need for a fresh start. She takes a job as a detective in the sheriff’s department of a rural western county. Olivia’s first assignment is to go undercover as an exotic dancer in a nightclub run by gangsters. She has to battle mobbed-up criminals, a terrorist leader who is aware of Olivia’s history and abilities, and human traffickers to save her family and herself.

Excerpt

“That’ll just give them one more hostage,” Kardmelli protested.
“I can be very persuasive,” Olivia said with a feral grin.
Kardmelli stepped back and shivered. The hairs on his arms and legs stood straight up. The pulse on his neck was beating a mile a minute. Nickford was standing hunched over with his eyes wide open and his lower jaw hanging down.
I scared the crap out of both of them, Olivia thought. Nickford looks as if he’s about to pee his pants.
Kardmelli started to speak, but then had to clear his throat. “We’ll do whatever you want,” he said.
“You are ready to do what we asked?” an accented voice asked when Kardmelli buzzed the galley with the intercom.
“We have a woman who wants to speak with you.”
“You know what we want. We will not talk to anyone else, especially a woman!”
“Please just let her in to talk to you. She won’t be armed. What can another five minutes matter?”
There was a brief pause, and the voice said, “She wants to come in here? We will allow that, but five minutes is all she will get until time starts again.”
“You must assure me you’ll allow her to leave if you cannot come to an agreement,” Kardmelli said in mild attempt to remove suspicion of a trap.
“Of course, of course,” the voice said. Olivia knew he was lying. He wouldn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get one more hostage.
***
Olivia entered the galley, now very crowded with eight people in it. The door was slammed shut behind her by a man holding a gun. The captain was lying on the floor, clearly dead, with his throat slashed. So much for their promise to release him. Two of the attendants were crying, being watched over by a second man, standing to the side, wielding a knife. The third attendant, more defiant, was being held by a third terrorist who had one arm wrapped around her body and a knife to her neck. He relaxed slightly when he saw how small the new hostage was.
Olivia quickly assessed the situation, and decided she could probably handle it without changing and all the crap that would ensue if a leopard were to suddenly appear, apparently out of nowhere. She took two steps toward the man holding the attendant. He looked her over. An evil grin came to his face.
Moving so fast she was a blur, Olivia grasped the arm holding the knife, twisting it and breaking the wrist, grabbed the knife as it fell, and plunged it into the man’s heart. She shoved the body toward the man with the gun, and leaped toward the third man, who was too stunned to react immediately. She took hold of his head using both hands and twisted violently, snapping his spinal column. She caught his knife before it hit the floor and threw it at the terrorist with the gun, now entangled with his dead companion.
He ducked away from the flying knife. That gave Olivia time to move forward, grab his gun, and yank it out of his hand, dislocating his elbow in the process. He screamed in pain. Before he could react in any other way, she broke both of his clavicles with a two-handed karate chop, keeping him alive for questioning, but rendering him helpless.
“Holy Mary Mother of God,” one of the attendants murmured. Her eyes were opened wide. Her pupils were dilated. She was taking deep breaths and her hands were shaking. Beads of sweat were on her face, even though the room was cool. “Who are you?” she croaked.
“Secret Service,” Olivia replied as she opened the galley door.
